Florian Hecker, a long-standing figure in the contemporary electronic music scene, works with synthetic sound, and the experience of listening in relation to perceptive phenomena and architectural spaces’ acoustics. With Auditory Scene Resynthesizer he brings a new sonic perspective to life, exciting the mind in the hallucinatory production of objectivity. What do machines hear that human cannot? In his sound performances he explores degrees of perceptual resolution hitherto inaccessible via human listening. Hecker adopts a granular approach to sound, which is treated as a series of discontinuous elements, forming a sound archipelago. In this respect he adopts a recursive procedure of Re-mediation in which sound continues to be reworked or re-learned by machines, in a self-updating process that leads to endless new versions. After years of work on the granular analysis of sound and voice treated as code and language, he is currently interested in the inverse process: the humanized syntheses of the computational product as a basis for investigating the peculiarities of individual listening. A reconstruction that starts from a neuronal perspective: the encoding of sound as sensation. It is research on the effects of sound that privileges the elusiveness of timbre. Minimal and evanescent phenomena such as the shimmering of a pearl or the reddish shade of a sunset are the equivalent of timbre on a visual level: they involve a radiating maze of nonuniformities. Hecker turns the understanding of acousmatics. The sounds he summons forth may well appear out of nothing, having no identifiable point of origin or source, assuming a very different understanding of bodies and embodiment.

Traversing performance, installation, and publications, Florian Hecker works with synthetic sound, the listening process and the audience's auditory experience to explore postwar compositional modernity, audiology, and psychoacoustical knowledge. Since 1996, Hecker has performed internationally, both in major concert halls and festivals for contemporary electronic music. His work Inspection (Maida Vale Project) has been commissioned by BBC Radio 3 as the BBC’s first ever live binaural broadcast and FAVN has been presented at Alte Oper Frankfurt in partnership with MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main (both 2016). His collaboration with Reza Negarestani, A Script for Machine Synthesis has been performed at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and at the Maison de la Radio, Paris, (both 2015); and Formulation (FLV Project) was presented as part of the inaugural exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris (2014). Recent major exhibitions and performances include Florian Hecker - Synopsis / Seriation, CU Art Museum, University of Colorado Boulder, CO, USA (2018); Florian Hecker - Halluzination, Perspektive, Synthese, Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; Florian Hecker - Synopsis, Tramway, Glasgow (both 2017); Florian Hecker - Formulations, MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main (2016) and those at Midway Contemporary Art, Minneapolis (2015); Sadie Coles HQ, London; Galerie Neu / MD72, Berlin; Articulação, Lumiar Cité, Lisbon; documenta 13, Kassel; and Nouveau Festival, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (all 2012). Hecker has an extensive discography, including Synopsis Seriation (Editions Mego, Vienna, 2021); Statistique Synthétique (GRM Portraits, Paris, 2020); Inspection II (Editions Mego, Vienna & Urbanomic Falmouth, UK, 2019); A Script for Machine Synthesis (Editions Mego, Vienna, 2017); Articulação Sintetico (Editions Mego, Vienna, 2017) and Hecker Leckey Sound Voice Chimera (Pan, Berlin, 2015).
