One of the great pioneers of the Russian cinema, Protazanov shows a predilection for the psychological realism of his characters with the support of such outstanding actors as Ivan Mozhukhin who plays a dual role in this film, as both a parliamentarian who is a drug addict and as his alias, a tramp who replaces him in both his political and his family life.
