Global farming output meets the food requirements of over 8 billion people. Climate change, global trade, excessive soil consumption and the use of agrichemicals, however, are threatening present and future productivity. New approaches for protecting food crops are, will be and must be used to guarantee productivity in a sustainable fashion. Mushrooms, in their extreme versatility, are well placed to help us recycle our food waste and to "mediate" sustainability in the agrifood sector.
Massimo Reverberi, Lecturer in plant pathology, Department of Environmental Biology, Rome Sapienza University - Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences, he studies plant diseases to discover how to treat them and how to fight pathogens in an environmentally sustainable manner.
