Warsaw suite
directed by Tadeusz Makarczyński (Suita Warszawska, Poland 1946, b/w, duration: 18 min., 35 mm)

This film launched the classic school of Polish documentary films. Without a single word being spoken, it portrayed the path leading from the destruction of war (the first part) to a slow return to life (the second part) and to normality (the final part). The title became a visting card for Polish cinema and it was screened all around the world... except in Poland! The return to normal life in the final part took place too spontaneously, without any intervention on the part of the party, thus making it unacceptable.

The Cruise
directed by Marek Piwowski (Rejs, Poland, 1970, 65 min. – original version with Italian subtitles)

Two friends sneak onto a boat to take part in a small cruise on the Vistula, but one of them is taken for a Communist Party cadre. The mistaken identity triggers a series of surreal gags in a crescendo of misunderstandings and paradoxical situations that ends up involving all of the passengers on board. The film, an at times grotesque parody of the absurdities and contradictions of Communist Poland, was not banned by the censors – but only two copies were distributed! Although that did not prevent it from becoming an instant cult movie.
