Maria Hassabi is an artist and choreographer based in New York. Over the years she has developed a very specific choreographic practice built on the relationship between the body and the image, and defined by a sculptural physicality immersed in long time spans. Her work draws its strength from the tension between the human subject and the artistic object, transforming the dancer into both a performer and a physical entity. Maria Hassabi's creations are performed in theatres, museums, galleries and public spaces all over the world. In Rome she will be presenting the pre-première of her new piece entited Together.
Maria Hassabi is an artist and choreographer of Cypriot origin. Over the years she has developed a choreographical practice built on the relationship between the body and the image, built on sculptural physicality and the expansion of time. Her work has been performed in theatres, museums, galleries and public spaces throughout the world. Hassabi received the prestigious New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” Award for PLASTIC in 2016, the Herb Alpert Award in 2015, the President’s Award for Performing Arts from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council in 2012, the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2011, and the Grants to Artists Award from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts in 2009. She also has a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree from the California Institute of the Arts.
