Masterpieces of Japanese animation

Japanese animation has revolutionised the world's cinema, destroying the prejudicial view that cartoons are good only for children. Stupendous visuals, rich narrative, a renewed sense of amazement and a rejection of the reassuring "good guys versus bad guys" approach have turned it into both a tool for exploring human nature and a pearl of cinematographic excellence.  To tie in with the Mangasia exhibition, a selection of Japanese animated masterpieces reveals the astonishing imaginary world created by Miyazaki, Takahata – the founders of the legendary Studio Ghibli production company – and other leading Japanese directors as they address such universal issues as love, lack of communication, lost innocence, the pain caused by distance, our relationship with nature and the fate of mankind. This retrospective will prove to be an exciting, engaging and revealing experience even for audiences who rarely show more than just a passing interest in animated movies.

Our thanks for the films go to: Francesco Chiatante, Luca Raffaelli and Carlo Dutto, Dynit, Koch Media, Lucky Red, Nexo Digital, Park Circus and Sony Pictures.
