Images as Investigation: the role of photography and digital storyteeling in the context of global crises

To tie in with the World Press Photo Exhibition 2020, on at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni from 16 June to 2 August 2020, we are organising a series of introductory talks to the visual narration of the crises besetting our world today. The proliferation of images accompanying our digitalised society asks urgent questions of us regarding the new narrative languages, the ethics of reporting and the way influence is exercised on public opinion. The visual journalist who uses photography or the new digital languages has a role to play both as witness and as the conveyor of content in connection with the violation of human rights, environmental crises and global injustice.

Through what channels do we access visual investigation and how is that investigation supported and disseminated by the media? What impact does it have on society and on the political debate? What is the relationship between reporter, image and context?

The debate is broken down into two online sessions for a wide-ranging discussion with some of the prizewinning Italian photographers at the WPP 2020 accompanied by the testimony of videomakers and editors-in-chief of Italian media.

The talks will be broadcast in streaming on Palazzo delle Esposizioni's Facebook page. If you wish to ask questions, you may do so using the video comment function.
