THE MAN WHO INVENTED ILLUSIONS | The great movies of Carlo Rambaldi
To tie in with The Mechanics of Monsters. From Carlo Rambaldi to Makinarium

10.29__12.08.2019

a project curated by the Azienda Speciale Palaexpo

in conjunction with the Fondazione Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia –  Cineteca Nazionale

Running through the stunning list of films for which Carlo Rambaldi produced the special effects is like browsing through a page in the history of the movies, with milestones in the history initially of Italian and then of international cinema by such masters as Argento, Fellini, Bava, Ferreri, Pasolini, Avati, Spielberg, Scott, Zulawski, Lynch and many more besides. Our great "artisan", working for and with those directors, forged what was to become an irreplaceable part of movie creativity, translating their poetic vision of the world into effects as cunning as they were concrete, and offering us the illusion of a fantastic experience as animated and as tangible as though it were real. Rambaldi's work, even more than the celebrated creatures that put him in the global limelight with three Oscars, has been part and parcel of our cult movie scene since the 1960s, accompanying a unique season in taste and inventiveness, in genres ranging from mystery to sci-fi, from the grotesque to the surreal, and from the horrific to the visionary. Cinemagoers now have a unique opportunity to rediscover, on the big screen of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni's Sala Cinema, all the magic of classic movie illusion before the digital revolution in special effects made everything much easier, but also much colder and more impersonal.

Our gratitude for the films goes to: CG Entertainment, Fantafestival, Fondazione Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia – Cineteca Nazionale, Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna, Magnifica Ossessione, Massimiliano Rossi, Universal, Warner Bros.
