Mathematician Alessio Figalli obtained his doctorate in 2007 under the supervision of Luigi Ambrosio, from the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, and Cédric Villani from the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon. Figalli was a professor at the University of Texas at Austin prior to taking up his post as chaired professor at the ETH of Zurich in 2016. Since 2019 he has headed the "FIM-Institute for Mathematical Research" at the ETH of Zurich. Figalli was awarted the EMS prize in 2012, the Peccot-Vimont prize in 2011, the Peccot in 2012 from the Collège de France, the 2015 edition of the Stampacchia medal and the 2017 edition of the Feltrinelli prize for mathematics. He was nominated for the Nachdiplom Lecturer in 2014 at the ETH of Zurich. He was invited to speak at the Congresso Internazionale dei Matematici in 2014. In 2018 he was awarded the Fields medal and the Nobel for mathematics, "for his contributions to optimal transport, to the theory of partial differentiated equations and to probability”.
