Hands Up!

12 november
admission free

directed by Jerzy Skolimowski (Ręce do góry, Poland, 1967–81–85, 76 min. – original version with Italian subtitles)

introduced by retrospective curator Tadeusz Lubelski (with italian translation)

This film is one of the more exemplary instances of Polish film censorship. The authorities demanded that Skolimowski cut a decidedly iconoclastic scene in which a huge portrait of Stalin is displayed but the director refused, preferring not to release the film at all and to start working abroad. It was not until the new climate of detente kicked in in 1981 and the Association of Polish Film-Makers chaired by Wajda held an extraordinary convention, that the film was released with the addition of a long and fascinating prologue which Skolimowski filmed especially for the occasion.
