Jean, a deserter, wishes to leave France with the lovely Nelly, but he first has to kill his guardian and tormentor Zabel. The talents of Carné, Prevert and Gabin come together in this movie to produce one of the milestones of poetic realism, a film whose style and theme alike were to have a huge influence on the American noir.
