Now in its ninth year, A Qualcuno Piace Classico proposes to all film lovers an unmissable parade of fifteen masterpieces from the past, presented as always on 35mm prints and screened for free, while seats last. Promoted by Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia – Cineteca Nazionale, Azienda Speciale Palaexpo and La Farfalla sul Mirino, the program stands as a benchmark for new generations of filmgoers willing to discover works that last saw the light of a projector many years ago, but still have a lot to say: from Rohmer to Imamura, from Wajda to Pasolini, from Dreyer to Fassbinder, this year the list of cinematic masters is particularly rich. We begin with Ernst Lubitsch, whose legendary comedy Trouble in Paradise will open the program on November 5th. Other Classic Hollywood films that will be screened are John Ford's Sergeant Rutledge, one of the very first westerns featuring Afro-American main characters, and Don't Bother to Knock, starring the sensational Marilyn Monroe in one of her best roles.

Among the special events, the screening of Pauline à la plage, for the centenary of Éric Rohmer's birth; a great title from the silent era, Mikaël by Dreyer, accompanied by a live piano score by Maestro Antonio Coppola, a performance traditionally featured in our event. Just like last year, we're again proud to collaborate with Istituto Polacco di Roma in presenting Danton by Andrzej Wajda, a gem starring a monumental Gérard Depardieu. Even when working for a UK production, Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski still delivers with style: his Moonlighting is a lesser known work, yet not to be missed. Great European cinema is always the main attraction of the program with Fassbinder's Die dritte Generation, a pivotal work about terrorism in the seventies; Mauvais sang, cult movie by Leos Carax; La ley del deseo, one of the most celebrated films featuring the collaboration between Almodóvar and Banderas; Il Vangelo secondo Matteo, Pasolini's masterpiece. Shôhei Imamura's Buta to gunkan is a fundamental title, a must-see by one of the most important filmmakers from the Japanese New Wave of the sixties. Last but not least, three filmmakers who made the history of the New Hollywood era: William Friedkin and his French Connection, arguably the best crime thriller ever produced, Paul Mazursky and his bittersweet comedy Harry and Tonto, and finally Woody Allen and one of his mature masterpieces, Hanna and her sisters, the last screening of the program.
