Enrico Bodo | The Chemistry of the Universe: the history of the atom from the big bang to the present day

30 November 2021, from 11:00am to 12:00pm
cycle of lectures organised in conjunction with Sapienza Università di Roma - Facoltà di Scienze Matematiche, Fisiche e Naturali

Atoms in chemistry are considered the basic units that make up the matter surrounding us. Contrary to what alchemists believe, atoms cannot easily be turned into one another unless one has an enormous amount of energy at one's fingertips. It would seem natural to suppose that atoms were formed with the big bang and have stayed that way ever since, but that is not true. We shall be exploring the ways in which the universe itself "manufactures" the atoms we're all made of.

Enrico Bodo is Professor of physical chemistry for undergraduates and of quantum chemistry for postgraduate students, Department of Chemistry, Rome Sapienza University - Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences, his research moves on the border between physics and chemistry, also involving the study of the characteristics of molecules.
